Facebook as the social networking giant is going to launch a new tool to deal with fake & fabricated news feeds to stops spread of rumors & misinformation.
With the proposed new feature users will be having the ability to flag fake stories with options like “it’s a fake news story” or “disputed” stories.
Once a news feed has been labeled as disputed or fake, third party organizations for fact checking will thoroughly examine the story for its authenticity.
Poynter as FB lead of this concept, told that if the story turned out to be fake / forged as result of check, the subject story will be labeled with a link explaining the reason of its not being genuine with warning for users & thus lowering its social feed. This feature might require some changes in Facebook algorithm as well.
Up till now 43 fact checking organizations from various regions have registered themselves for fact checking. These organizations will be governed under code of principles.
Facebook’s News authenticity tool will be launched first in Germany as presidential elections are going to be held soon. This tool will cope with fake stories to avoid rumors which might affect the results of elections as its believed in case of US presidential elections.
